A jewel in the crown of India's lake district, Nainital, was founded only in 1839 when a British trader set his eyes on it. Soon, the town became a health resort favoured by British soldiers and by colonial officials and their families trying to escape the heat of the plains. Later, the town became the summer residence of the governor of the United Provinces. 

Places in Nainital:

- Naini Lake: The heart of Nainital, around which everything revolves. The lake is a kidney-bean shaped lake surrounded hills, flanked by two promenades on both sides - the hustling/ bustling Mall Road and polar opposite Thandi sadak

- Mall Road: 2 km long promenade from one end of the lake to the other is a joy to walk on. Consisting of numerous shops and restaurants, the road will make your time fly by easily

Hills: The lake is surrounded by a set of hills. Naina (2,615 m/ 8,579 ft) on the north, Deopatha (2,438 m/ 7,999 ft) on the west, and Ayarpatha (2,278 m/ 7,474 ft) on the south. This means ample of exploration opportunities for hikers and trekkers. Naina peak is highest point overlooking Nainital.

Nainital Zoo: Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant High Altitude Zoo Nainital is the only Zoo in the newly born state of Uttarakhand. Boasting of  endangered species of inmates including Royal Bengal tiger, Tibetan wolves, sambar, leopard and Himalayan bear. It also has a vast collection of high altitude birds, like kalij pheasant, Lady Amherst pheasant, rose ringed parakeet, golden pheasant and red jungle fowl.
 

Ropeway and Snow View: One of few ropeways in India, the ropeway service provides for 2 wagons which carry 8 persons maximum each ferry, on opposite directions i.e. from Mallital Terminus to Snow view. Snow view is the top of Sher ka danda ridge and offers majestic views of top of the Himalayan peaks such as Nanda Devi, Trisul, and Nanda Kot. The Rope Way is made with state of the Art Swiss collaboration and has got a very steep ascend and descend. It has views of the lake while ascending and of the flats while descending. It is also one of the longest ropeways of Asia with a stretch of almost 750 meters. The ropeway can be seen in the Northern hill of Nainital and is a must visit.

 

Tiffin Top: Overlooking the hillstation, this vantage point is a good 5 km trek away and offers majestic views., specially during the night. The sunrise and sunset from this point are a sight to behold. 

Region. Beside being one of the popular destinations, the center of attraction is Nainital Zoo. Named as ‘Bharat Ratna Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant High Altitude Zoo Nainital’, this zoo is located at a great height of 2100 meters above sea level.
